I grew up and lived in the US for most of my life. It is ironic to me that today as I sit in Abu Dhabi, and listen to the speech of Martin Luther King, for the first time I notice…
For the first time I notice that he says I HAVE A DREAM. When we think of dreams usually they are things that have happened and something we talk about when we are awake. For Martin Luther King his dream was his reality and as he sleeps now that dream plays the song of truth.
I love knowing that we can all sit down at the same table no matter where we live, and no matter the color of our skin, our race or our religion. I like knowing this is possible, but I don’t like seeing that at times today; even today in all places it is not practiced. I have seen people treated differently because of the way they look or because of the accent they hold.
A prince in a pauper’s clothes would perhaps feel the feelings that are necessary for learning to treat people equally. I tend to think or want to believe that a pauper in a prince’s house would treat even the mice in the dungeon right. Feelings are essential when we speak of rights and equality. Feeling the depth of the King’s speech reaches me on another level now that I live in a society that does not have casts defined, but indeed if one has eyes, one can see. Remember for me eyes are not the two eyeballs we carry in their sockets but eyes are the sight and the vision that comes from with in.
I pray today as I watch the Black and White video of Martin Luther King, I pray I may not ever see colors, unless it is the colors of the rainbows and the colors of peacocks not too proud to show their reign.
May you rest in peace dear dear Father of all Dreams…. the dream I have is to be able to be awake and to dream the dreams of all dreams.
