Well here is the day, I started posting Valentine’s Poetry last week
I even mentioned I started thinking about this day a year ago
right after this day had come and gone.
But you, you have left it for this last last minute to call your friend
to ask what she recommends you do. Little do you know she is lost herself.
Here is a little poem to get you going on this day
and hopefully saving face in front of your special someone and the friends
never mind the parents.
Here are not a dozen roses, for I did not want to be boring like others
Here is not a diamond ring, for I did not want to be repetitious like last year
Here is not a dinner reservation at the posh French restaurant on the hill
for I did not want us to run into everyone we know
But was I right to remember that you said you liked Hamlet
But was I right that the best part of the dinner at the French restaurant was the bread and butter
And also the tickets to cold play I gave up to get the tickets to Les Miserables,
for I know I would be so happy to see you happy next to me
And I am not sure if you noticed but when you got into the car
there was a flower petal in your seat with our initials carved
in my hand writing as I thought of us writing our names on the beach
So this Valentine I take you to the beach, and bring the bread and butter
and Hamlet to read and then tomorrow night when everyone is home and all the fuss is over
you and I will dress up and go for the best evening ever
watching Les Miserable knowing how happy we are being together again
Happy Valentine’s day to you my love
I feel happy on this day of love to know a person like you
with such a big heart and gentle soul
What do you think? If a line in this poem does not give you an idea of how to make your special one smile, then it means you are just looking for a genie in a magic lamp but not really having any wishes at all.
See you here again next year

And of course on all topics including Love, I always consult with Khalil Gibran: Gibran on Love
Toward the end of the poem he addresses laughter and tears… I like this in the context of Valentine’s day and going to see Les Miserable, life is a combination of laughter and tears…. Gibran says it beautifully” Into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears.”

I loved this poem. It made me see how truly simple an act of love can be and how true love is the greatest gift one has to offer a loved one. Wonderful poem.

As simple as writing someones name over and over again in the sand knowing that the feelings will remain in the heart. Or just being next to a loved one at time of need….. let’s say if that loved one is celebrating something grand or realizing the depth of loss. I have learned from you these beautiful traits, dear travel companion. Thank you
