UAE Olympic Tribute A Poem on Mother’s Day

Olympic Football Player and MOTHER
Olympic Football Player and MOTHER

For this mothers day, I chose this picture taken by Atiq-ur-Rahman, Gulf News of a son who is a champion in front of the world, and yet he shows such subdued respect to his mother who bore him to life.

MOTHER’S DAY:

On this day if you were to say only two lines to your mother, what might it be?
Perhaps…

Mother dear, you gave me a warm home when I did not even know the meaning of home
Mother dear, your arms protected me when I awakened you at all odd hours of the night
Mother dear, thank you for bearing with me when I was a teenager and thought myself so wise
Mother dear, I know there are millions of caterpillars in the cocoon waiting flight
Thank you for showing me flight even when I knew not I had wings to fly

And on this day I will leave you with a few of my thoughts as a daughter, a mother and a poet

Mothers day is a day to remember our place in the universe
Mothers day is a day to remember the womb that carried us to life
I myself am the youngest of six
I shared the gentle home of my mother’s womb with my 4 brothers and 1 sister
I myself have 2 young daughters and
They carry many eggs ready to be fertilized possibly one day into this life

The beauty of mother’s day is in remembering the not seen mothers
The one’s who bore a child but had no arms to hold the child
The beauty of mother’s day is to remember the orphans
that have found no warmth on a dark fever filled night
In remembering the invisible mothers that care for orphans like their own child
In remembering the young that go to old folks homes
to visit those that do not have a child to come and feed them lunch
In cleaning the dentures of the old woman that lives down the lane
In holding a bottle for a child in a hospital whose mother died at birth

Mother’s day is indeed a nice time to write a note to one’s mother on a leaf
or in the sand in the desert or by the sea
Mother’s day is also a nice day to buy a diamond heart
for the mother who was beaten by the drunk husband night after night
Most importantly for me mother’s day is the time to realize that male or female
anyone can be a mother anyone who touches a heart with a smile or a kiss
anyone who bears a light and lightens a heart and soul

And here are two birds in the middle of the desert…. The mother and the child

How beautiful this prayer and these words. Any mother would be fortunate to have these words read to them or sent to them on any day. Thank you for sharing these words with us. Thank you.

How lovely this ode to mothers. How gentle and soft your words of compassion and light. Thanks for reminding us that we can all be mothers, male or female, with or without child. You touch my heart with your understanding and empathy. Thanks.

Yes, we can all be mothers, after all, a mother is only a state of thought and being, where one is able to touch another’s heart. You have held me in so many instances as I have learned to take baby steps in this way of knowing myself on this journey of light.
