Memorial Day 2012: A POEM

Picture of graves decorated with flags at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day
Memorial Day 2012 Poem

Memorial Day

How does one mark the days that one does not remember
How does one mark a grave with no name but only with a life inside no longer
It is in service that most of these burials have happened and
it is in remembering that we remind ourselves it is good not to forget

Lives lost in wars
Wars caused by words not understood
Listening is the key to any relationship
Whether it is between men and men
Men and women
Women and men
State and state
Country and county
Continent and nation
or between us and mother Earth

After all we can always get into some kind of war and fight
There are never any winners
The only loser is everyone

So on this Memorial Day
If you take a flag to an unmarked grave say a prayer for me
If you write a card to a friend say a prayer for me
If you go to the mall and shop and forget the reason why say a prayer none the less
But most of all on this day remember to listen to hearts speaking
In listening you may avoid a feud or a fight or even a war of roses

According to Wikipedia: Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May.  It originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering   the men and women who died while serving in theUnited States Armed Forces.

Beautiful poem: Peace to each manly soul that sleepeth. And they who for their country die, to quote from Joseph Drake, shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.

Thank you dear travel companion, you are so right… “peace to each manly soul that sleepth” and may we not weep but cherish the moments we still have here on earth. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this poem.
